Daily Sketch: Giraffe

Ralibar Vooz Covers

These two Illustrations were finals for my concept 2 class @ UVU taught by the super talented Don Seegmiller. For this class we were given a story and had to develop the main characters. The entire class drew literally hundreds of sketches. We even had the pleasure of having James Christensen come to the class twice to critique out work. For the Final Don wanted us to create two Illustrations. I love the art work of Mike Mignola and Mike Henry so I used their work as influences. Also I thought it would be fun to treat the art work as covers for a comic book series. There are tons of things I'd like to fix but what's done is done. Hope you all like them.

Quick Painting Process

Here is a quick study I did of the Hulk. All in all the whole thing took a little over 2 1/2 hours to complete.

Stared out with a sketch in the old Moleskine sketch book. Then took it into Photoshop And added some value. Next I took the file into Painter and blended it all together. Then took it back into Photoshop and cleaned everything up, added some color, textures and blamo! Quick study done.

Zombabilly Rock

This a painting that I just finished for my Digital Painting @ UVU taught by Ryan Wood. For this assignment we were to create a music album for a fictional musician. I thought it would be fun to do a retro Rockabilly/ Zombie singer based on Elvis or Johnny cash. Here ya go Zombabilly!

Gaga for Gaga

Another painting for school. for this project we were all assigned different celebrities to paint caricatures of. I was given Lady Gaga. I have never really listened to her music but this was a way fun piece to design and paint. FYI the banner was designed by psdgraphics.com. Search curled red ribbon and you'll find it. Great site for tutorials and all that. Hope you like it.

Lessons From Kirk

Sup gang! Time to update the blog with my latest batch of paintings. First we Captain Kirk. This was painted for my Editorial Illustration Class @ UVU taught By Richard Hull. For this assignment we were all given articles to create spot illustrations for. Mine was titled 5 Life Lessons Learned from James T. Kirk. This was a blast to paint!

Self Portrait

Here we have a self portrait that I painted for my Digital Painting 2 class at UVU. There were some amazing challenges that came with this one. It went through a least 4 or 5 different versions. I'm grateful that I had some amazing instructors such as Ryan Wood and Don Seegmiller to help me create this painting.

Hellboy updated!

I have always loved this painting it represents a lot of growth for me as an artist. There is one thing about this image that has always bothered me, Hellboy's chops. When I first painted this I had no idea how to paint hair. So like any artist I did my best and the out come was lackluster at best. In recent months, I have spent a what seems like a ton of time painting hair both digitally and traditionally. The image on the bottom I painted last summer and the top is one that I spent 5 minutes repainting the hair. I know I could have spent some more time getting it perfect, but I just wanted to quickly fix the hair... take care!!!

Shape Monsters

This is a really quick painting maybe 30-40 minutes. It's always fun to play with shapes, to see how you can push them and give them a little personality. I find it way fun to draw random shapes and see what kind of characters I can design from them. I have tons of sketchbook filled with random sketches like these.

Latest pixel painting for my digital painting 2 class @ UVU. For this assignment we had to paint an animal in a vehicle with three textures.

My latest project for my Digital Painting class. For this  assignment we had to create a beverage ad for robots. Mine was a energy drink called Nitromethane! 

Mrs. Assisted Living

This is a painting for Richard Hull's Illustration 2 class @ UVU. The assignment was to illustrate an abstract word, my word was mature. I thought Mrs. Assisted Living was a perfect fit.

Fight Club

Here is my latest painting. It's a follow up to the monkey portrait I did a few weeks ago in my digital painting class. This assignment was to create an arch nemesis for our first character and to put them in a non traditional portrait. Another requirement was to use a sepia color pallet and one additional color. The Street Fighter series from Capcom are my favorite video games ever. So I put these guys in my own version of the game.

The Queen of all Color

This my latest painting. Another class project in which we had to illustrate a metaphor. Mine was " the queen of all color is black" (Renoir). For this piece I thought it would be cool to paint an African woman in silhouette with beautiful patterns surrounding her.

American Gothic 2.0

This painting is called "American Gothic 2.0" or "The Death of Farming". It was created for a conceptual Illustration class that I'm taking this semester. Didn't turn out quite how I wanted but none the less here it is.

Heathcliff Edmund III

This is my first assignment for Digital Painting 2 taught by Ryan Wood. The project was to create a black and white portrait.
This guy is named Heathcliff Edmund III. He's decorated veteran, who fought in the First Simian-Human Civil War.

Sketch Trade with Phil Cannon!

Right before the semester ended Phil Cannon and I decided to do a "sketch trade". The deal was this, I'd draw something and so would Phil then we'd trade. Here's what we came up with... 

Steve Jobs: Seiler Style!

This is painting that I did for my History of Illustration class at UVU taught by Perry Stewart. The assignment was to pick an illustrator and to create a piece based on their style. Perry suggested that I pick Jason Seiler (www.jasonseiler.com) His work is fantastic! The original sketch was done in blue Col-erase colored pencil and the final painting was done in Photoshop. This piece was a blast to paint hope you all like it!

Red Dragon!

Here is the final version of the Red Dragon painting with a little added smoke... he is a dragon after all!

The Process...

Hey gang! I was working on some stuff for school today and thought I'd share a little bit of my process. First I started out with a quick pencil sketch. Next I scanned, resized, converted the sketch to non-photo blue and printed it out. Then I inked and applied some watercolor to it. The paper I used was horrible for watercolor and was being quite difficult, so back into the computer it went for a little digital treatment... and Presto!

Banjo Pigs!

I'm still messing around with watercolor paints in my media tech class at UVU. The latest assignment was "Banjo Pigs".  Here is the website that inspired the subject http://banjopigs.blogspot.com/. This time I used a little photoshop magic to enhance the paintings. (watercolor, ink and Photoshop)

Honest Abe

I actually painted this one before the red hulk but I figured that I'd post it up anyway. I've been experimenting with traditional mediums in Illustrative Media Techniques 1 at UVU. We just finished oil paints and have now moved on to watercolor. This is my first watercolor painting for that class. It was a real pleasure to paint this and I did learn quite a bit. Aside from letting the beard and hair get out of control I'm happy with how it turned out. (graphite and watercolor)

Red Hulk

I found a really cool 3D model of the hulk on the internet the other day and decided you use it as reference for my next watercolor attempt... It's always nice to unplug from the computer and use traditional mediums (Graphite, ink and watercolor). This was way fun to make. Stand by for more!
